Elon Musk wants to install a human colony on Mars
Elon Musk, the millionaire behind companies like PayPal, Tesla Motors and Space company SpaceX, wants to help install a Martian colony of up to 80,000 people, carrying explorers to mars for a price of USD $ 500,000 per passenger. This is the plan described by Musk at a conference at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London, where he received a medal for his contribution to the commercialization of space.
In his view, should first from a group of 10 or so people to install the bases on Mars aboard a reusable rocket that works based on liquid oxygen and methane. Together they would travel with lots of luggage, including machines to produce fertilizer, methane and oxygen from nitrogen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and underground water ice on the planet.
Travelers also bring with them construction materials to create transparent domes pressurized CO2 from the Martian atmosphere, and to allow people to grow plants. As the colony self-sufficient return, most settlers would be transported to the planet, with fewer supplies and less equipment.
The ship that allows transport to Mars will not travel back and forth at first, and it would take a generous amount of fuel, because Earth and Mars are not always the same distance. Musk also rejected the use of the Dragon capsule SpaceX for a trip like this, but the ship would be a huge vehicle capable of landing on Mars full.
Regarding the price of USD $ 500,000 for the passage to Mars, Musk said it is a reasonable price for a person of an advanced country around 40 years, comparing the value of the ticket to buy a house. He also found that of the 8,000 million humans on Earth to be where possible create a Martian colony, perhaps only 1 in 100,000 are fit to travel, implying some 80,000 migrants.
According to Musk, the trip to colonize Mars should be a partnership between government and private companies, and would cost around USD $ 36,000 million. Most of the investment will be made at first, and then the costs would go down as technology improves and becomes more self-sufficient colony.
The founder of SpaceX is also planning future versions of the rockets manufactured by the company to make the trip to Mars, perhaps evolved versions of the Falcon 9 . Looks like they were crazy ideas, but Musk is serious about these plans and who knows, perhaps the Martian colonies are not that far.
