Five reasons why it’s worth to overclock

Five reasons why it's worth to overclock

Every time I build teams wonder I always ask back if you plan to overclock, because it greatly affects the choice of pieces to choose from. A lot of people do not care, because by this budget, knowledge, and use of equipment likely to prevent it. But others are merely interested in improving your PC performance substantially.

In fact, if they will end up with a team somewhat faster than the factory, are willing to release some more tickets so to do, but not all scenarios are equal, so that we give you five reasons to see if it the penalty or not to overclock, or in other words, increasing hardware performance beyond what is established from the outset.

A. – When the performance increase is remarkable

This is the main reason, and the most weight when it comes to boosting the performance of a piece, as the processor or video card – two of the most common components in improving how’s the team.

You see: there are pieces on the market that allow huge performance gains, including improved by more than 50% initial performance (default) of the piece. Anything less would squander the money, especially when overclocking potential is somehow considered in the price. For example, the Black Edition or Core terminated “K”, which cost added on the label as they have been designed for these functions. Not done, that was paid extra has gone overboard.

Otherwise, components that put more of a bonding and / or which proves to be no gain should definitely stay as you came into your hands, especially when you purchase components “factory overclocked” to add a step but subtract another. Also, not all parts are played well, even if they are identical models.

2. – When there is no money to upgrade

Another big reason, but often only taken into account when the team is passing the dreaded field “I need an update.” Put another way, when there is money to fund a deposit update or change of equipment at short notice, possibly the only option for improving team performance is to overclock.

This is more a problem than a solution, but in some cases it is worth spending a day improving your performance to touch the roof of the stable. Another example: many can move smoothly 2.0GHz to 3GHz and fraction without breaking a sweat, which means saving the price of a faster processor and new. Hey, you can even get cheaper to buy a more powerful fan.

In some cases, a good can cause the equipment to last a few months, and in the worst case you will know that anyway will have to upgrade your computer permanently. Well … at least get out of the question.

3. – When there are facilities

Lighter, add water. If you have to gut a processor and integrated sink-get that piece of copper above the core-or buy a new motherboard (I have had knowledge of these cases), I think it’s much better to spend those resources in an update.

Saying “facilities” to overclock basically means that you should not need more than your hands to set up the pieces. Many mid-range motherboards have basic options for overclocking, and there are many utilities on the Internet to do with video cards. Even today you can overclock without entering the BIOS, saving you time before making the changes permanent. But when things get complicated and you have to become an engineer and programmer in assembly soldering, better overclock pass by.

Beside the above, the vast majority of parts not allow overclock, and placed unstable when operating on the frequency of factory, they are probably not entirely made for clocking.

4. – When the temperature is acceptable

One thing to consider is the temperature overclocking. Generally, the temperature variation that dispels the piece to work, plus the energy it consumes, rises a little when their performance increases. When applying higher voltage case changes dramatically as the rise becomes something closer to exponential than linear.

If passed in school physics lessons, you will know that in pears and apples, to make a piece more often a good option is to increase the voltage it receives. Alongside this, the energy it needs and generates temperature rises considerably, and if the fan is not good dissipating the heat generated by the computer stops working. If that is the case, nothing better to improve the cooling equipment.

Today, computers have a good monitoring of temperatures interas to detect and shut down parts that exceed the temperature “healthy” work, which usually does not vary beyond 80º ~ 90º before appearing signs of melting or smoke. In case you did not know, a considerable rise in voltage can burn some circuits.

5. – When you have some patience

Point fatal for some, no problem for others. Be patient when overclocking is the main pillar in improving the performance of your pieces, it is not easy or quick as many suppose, but to succeed, the pay can be very good.

Why so slow? Well, first think that this is about finding “ceilings” that are not written anywhere. After finding these roofs performance, another step is to find out why and fix are generated. Voltage may be missing, may be temperature, the lack of fine adjustments, or even poor quality of power supply. Hey, not everyone can overclock when the components are top notch and the source is emaciated.

To this is added the stability test. This is to stress all system components for a considerable time, say 12 hours is good, and see if, indeed, the computer is maintained without alarms. Otherwise, if something bad does happen, you have to go back and see what is failing to fix it.

6. – Bonus track: When you make a world record

Users who want to register your name on silicon and have 15 minutes of international fame, then do so. In the worst case you will know that failure and learn the tricks of the components. Here it all if you want to do a feat: dry ice, liquid nitrogen, two power supplies, four voltage regulators, and so on.

But be careful with the ends. As you’re squeezing each transistor involved, it is likely that the first attempts done by changing parts or burned straight. Here anything goes, but also mentally prepared for bad news such as potential bottlenecks or pieces that do not have a ceiling acceptable for a world record. In the above cases you just have to buy a new piece and try your luck, just ask those extreme overclockers that are in the Top 10.

Besides a lot of money involved in hardware and cooling, we must also invest in software to validate the record. For example, is a program to measure the performance of video cards, and to give validity to record a license is necessary. Many also spend their rest trying to optimize Windows to work to a minimum and not be able to destabilize the team when it is overstretched.

In the end, multiply by five points three times.
