Netflix raises its value on the stock to rumors of acquisition by Microsoft
Yesterday, Netflix closed trading on Wall Street higher, with 13% of the value of opening day. One might think that this is due to the strong performance of the company during the last quarter (although it did not reach their expectations in the number of users), but apparently other reasons would be, and more unfounded.
According to Forbes, it would be another reason that rumors pointing to the acquisition of Netflix by Microsoft. These rumors are fed in large part by the recent departure of the CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, the board of directors of Microsoft (although according to Hastings, his retirement is because he wants to spend more time on Netflix and other things). And if Microsoft would like to discuss the acquisition of streaming service, would clearly not good for the same Hastings participate in these discussions.
Moreover, some analysts believe that Microsoft would be useful too to own Netflix. If the desire of the Redmond company’s reach first digital entertainment, Netflix would be an important step. You could, for example, remove the service or do your direct competitors Xbox 360 exclusive, but given the number of Netflix users on other platforms (PS3, iPad, Mac), perhaps this move is not the most appropriate.
More importantly, Netflix would not face a takeover by Microsoft, and indeed would even cheaper than Skype last year. Of course, for now are just rumors and from Microsoft say they do not comment on speculation, but the word already ran. Time will tell.
