Nikon aims to change the concept of their cameras to compete with smartphones

Makoto Kimura, President of , said he wants to develop a new concept camera, to counter and take advantage of the boom in with smartphones. “Rapid expansion of mobile devices has given us a change in the business environment,” said in an interview published in Bloomberg , besides indicating that their mission is to find an answer to that change.

With the increase of mobile users, Kimura said that “we have centralized our ideas about the cameras, but we can change our approach to deliver products to the market bigger.”

“We want to create a product that changes in the future, the concept of camera,” Kimura said, adding that it could be another product that might not be a camera, within five years, but declined to say whether the company was developing a mobile phone.

Traditionally, Nikon has been slow in some areas innovation. An example of this has been the Coolpix S800c, a from Android , which proved to be somewhat disappointing in their performance so as to image quality. Against this, Makoto Kimura said the company has learned from the experience.

The company has also ventured into the cloud with a service to store and share photos .
