Review: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti

Today is the official launch of the new GTX 660Ti, a model that we have been advertising for quite some time and has caught the expectations of enthusiasts around the world.

So, first we present a review of our friends , a group of intrepid professionals who have taken every ounce of performance to the new model of NVIDIA, who have shared content with us for this excellent work should as many people as possible. We are facing a new friendship that we hope will continue to grow over time, better and new ways, all for you, our readers, always have premium content right before your eyes, like the one we present today.

Without further ado, let’s review where we find that the performance of the GTX 660Ti left as the absolute dominant in its price range, coming dangerously close to top-line models of AMD …

GTX660 Ti: Architecture and Design A masked GTX 670?

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 2

NVIDIA presents the same core GK 104 seen in older versions, but with a couple of cuts. First, we have the same 1344 CUDA cores that the GTX 670 (with a unit SMx disabled) and same frequency of 915 MHz and 980 MHz based turbo core. Small differences highlighted in the bandwidth is reduced 256-bit to 192-bit and qe ROPs units down from 32 to 24. At first glance, very small changes that make us suppose that this brings a lot to show and perhaps very little envy of his older sisters.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 3

The idea to cut its powerful NVIDIA kernel gk104 is to make it reach the masses. Of course, these cuts seem to be more strategic than physical limitancias, ie, the same chip that the company trades its GTX 680 and GTX 670, but with modifications “on purpose”, so to speak. This is a new niche Habre downwards thanks to GK104 chip production becomes more effective and therefore there are a greater number of them to design other models.

Like the GTX 670 GTX 660 Ti reference this brings a fairly short PCB, which added to its full fan 24.5 cm length to make it seem like a higher end card (this process due to improved electrical own). This low energy used translates into the use of only two PCI-E 6 pin, producing a consumption of 150W.

With these specifications we have something like a GTX 670 masked as to have a reference point before starting the tests:

3 times faster

NVIDIA presents this new model as a video card that is more than three times faster than one of three generations ago (GTX 260), and nearly twice that of two generations ago (GTX 470). A fairly strong increase in the medium-high range, but many will be interested to know how things are genereaciones over current, and especially with its historic container.

Model Comparison

As the GTX 670 with the GTX 570, GTX 660 Ti has replaced the “hierarchical level” to the GTX 560 Ti, who many will remember as being a very good model gamer at low cost. To get an idea of what numbers NVIDIA us, we have the following comparative table with the details and differences between the actual cards.

We leave the technical section and go to the chamber sessions, to see this outfit looks like light bulbs and the best angle. This is not a DejaVu, but Kepler’s grace is beginning to replicate not only internally but externally. Yes, it is very similar to the GTX 670. The card has the same width, length, cooler and design as its big brother, so do not spend unnecessary time NVIDIA to give pause to their engineers and designers. On the other hand, the GTX 660 Ti is a worthy follower of the look GeForce NVIDIA introduced this year.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 7NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 8
As you can see the card even has the same rare provision in the middle where the two connectors are PCI-e 6 pin. A pair of angles of this piece, which lets us see the black frame in very attractive and very few manufacturers that use, as we will see several custom models, not just in look but also the PCB GTX Did someone say 660 Ti-like GTX 680? Here, our protagonist connector: A DVI-I and DVI-D, HDMI output and the new DisplayPort, the classics we’ve seen in older cards.

Another batch of sexy angles to undress before going to our partner and … continue taking pictures.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 12 Disarm and we see the core, memory chips, the 4 phase power and two power connectors in its entirety. On the other hand we noting the similarities with the GTX 670. Now cooling, the aluminum and the copper base is the same.

With you the classic core in its GK104 GK104-300-KD-A2, remember that seen in the GTX 670 is the version GK104-325-KD-A2. Those 25 digits least indicate that we are at the GTX 660 Ti .

We went down the walkway to our GTX 660 Ti and we posed in our platform to start testing now.

To leave no doubt on the evidence we turn to our lab more powerful processor, the Intel Core i7-3770K and its 8 talking heads on 22nm, and presumed to be much more effective in games. We also collect the latest cards that have passed through our desks and boards overclock, to which we gave an update of drivers to deal with the small star of today.

Test Methodology

The tests will be run, this time with the default system (including CPU, memory and GTX 660 Ti). By this we mean that the processor will behave as it is to assemble the PC, with its Turbo Boost active and also saving systems. The memories will be left at 1600 MHz with 9-9-9-24 latencies, and the NVIDIA GTX 660 Ti, we’ll leave it to its factory settings corresponding to the GPU 915 MHz, 980 MHz and 6008 MHz to boost effective GDDR5 for memories.

The tests were run at least three times in order to avoid erroneous runs, false or other lucky. Then we proceed to form the average of the most stable and finally added to each graph.

For this time we added one of the most popular games, demanding and challenging to date. You already know of which we speak, Battlefield 3 in their level scene feature “Swordbreaker” (second stage), which has recorded a timedemo own 120 seconds, which begins just across the door to the garage, before of being shot our comrade in arms. Well, words are often left over, so a Full HD pictures you can explain better how this card performs.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 16

Kepler architecture has been showing excellent performance relationship / consumption, eliminating the “Achilles heel” (or the specter of over-consumption) that produced the design for two generations ago. This GTX 660 Ti for stays, offering a consumer according to rank and very similar to that of competing solutions. This card proves that in spite of requiring two 6-pin connectors, not expected to have costly sources of power over real power 400/500W.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 17

As for temperatures, the GTX 660 IT will not take our applause, because strangely its cooling system (which differs little from a GTX 670) is not good enough, or we play GK104 generates much more heat than usual . Anyway more stoops table indicates that the regulation of ventilation can help improve these temperatures, of course, based on more noise.

% Speed Idle temperature Full temperature RPM + / -
Auto% 24 88 1065
40% 23 63 1470
50% 20 74 1920
60% 20 61 2460
70% 20 57 3090
80% 20 53 3840

Note that all configuration software marked a fan speed limit to 80%, so do not be alarmed thinking that missing information in the above table.

Synthetic tests

Beginning with the tests, we retire to our classic test in Futuremark 3Dmark benchmark figure of 06. With this benchmark can not prove much (since it’s old) but it is interesting to see how the GT 660 is hacerca You and your sisters. Hopefully that goes with the other evidence.

3DMark 2006

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 18

It is clear that the new NVIDIA card has little to envy to the highest in rank, proving to be a suitable to achieve some records in this test. In fact it is so narrow the score that exceeds, by a margin of error, the GTX 670.

3DMark Vantage

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 19

In vantage the thing is situated a little more “real” and we have the star of the day over the HD 7870, its counterpart in price. That if, behind this advance team.

3DMark 11

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 20NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 21

Now with the most current benchmark figure, which brings out the advantages of both card, we see that the GTX 660 Ti and begins to highlight not only outperforms the HD 7870, but also closely follows both the So as extreme performance, the HD 7970. The GTX 660 Ti delivers the approval of the first round of tests.

Unigine Heaven – hwbot Edition

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 22

With Unigine the thing is different and the GTX 660 Ti to lands adjacent to the HD 7870, while the most TOP soar above few points. Here we begin to notice something that will be present in the most demanding tests, the bandwidth.

Tests in DX 10 and DX games 9

We left the synthetic tests back and start with the evidence where it really should pay the GPUs. So if we start with the not so demanding that maintain the use of DirectX 10 API.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 23

FPS’s show still stands and now Resident Evil 5 (it expects new title) proves to be a no brainer for all graphs exceeding 60 FPS. Say here that either the winner is worth little. Anyway the GTX 660 Ti shows their level and remains above the HD 7870.

Stalker: Call of Pripyat

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 24

Another almost identical result. They are all beasts of graphics for a game that already has its years.

Metro 2033 – DX10

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 25

We got quite the level with Metro 2033 and figure we can see that it is quite demanding on any current plot. Just see how they stick around 10 FPS minimum is scary. The GTX 660 Ti stands similarly with a good margin in the 30 FPS “playable”. The advanced are not perturbed by this cabezita that looks.

Testing DX 11 games

We passed the most demanding tests with DX 11. They really see if the GTX 660 Ti is worthy of the famous GK104 core using their older sisters, or see if the competition is threatened by this outfit that came to own the midrange.

Alien vs. Predator

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 26

Alien vs Predator is the beginning and in it the new “You” NVIDIA is left with the HD 7870. We hope to see if this was only the beginning something loose this card Is Green Drivers? (We know our fellow drivers in the afternoon are the signature green, but we now refer to the immaturity of the same).

Lost Planet 2

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 27

And of course … the GTX 660 Ti just wanted to suspend their participation and Lost Planet 2 shows us that do not want to be left behind. So much so that reaches over for a couple of FPS at the highest (ex-senior actually) of reds. Something no negligible.

Metro 2033 DX11

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 28

One of the ring perfect to see the real power of the opponents, is a 2033 Metro with filters, activated teslación and DOF. Here if the going gets tough for each and only the top of the range are able to spend an average of 30 FPS, the GTX 660 mienstras Ti and HD 7870 are left behind. Here we note that we announced in the beginning, the signs of the cut in the bandwidth are present.

Versus full Battlefield 3 NVIDIA GTX 660 Ti

Now for the real-time test for Battlefield 3. A test that has become strong in our reviews and this time is no exception, as it brings together a very popular game, graphics-intensive and as close to reality when we play (remember that all the above tests are benchmark games trying to be as realistic as possible).

At this stage we hope to see if the GTX 660 will be a worthy companion Ti for a gamer who loves the game of the moment, requiring far fewer “Lucas” in the pocket.

So … the comparison with the contenders of the day is as follows:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 29

While the GTX 660 Ti is what keeps the “minimum” lowest averages recovered in beating the HD 7870 and the maximum sniping at the high end cards. Similarly the card is perfect to play with all that give the graphs of Battlefield 3 on a Full HD monitor.

This concludes our test run, we will now go to the section that we like. The GTX 660 TI will go to the torture room and hopefully get out alive. Let the overclocking.

Overclock! We record …

We could not leave out the interesting overclock this little giant, knowing that inside is reminiscent of her older sisters both have to talk in the world of overclocking.

Increase the performance of the NVIDIA GTX 660 Ti produced no major problems through the correct and healthy frequencies and voltages. For this, we use the known programs “Setting” provided by manufacturers such as MSI, MSI Afterburner with his acclaimed and Kombustor (for subsequent trial by fire), GPU Tweak with ASUS or EVGA EVGA Precision software with X. All meet essentially the same function, they share even the layout of the program.

Without wasting another minute we set up all the bars as high as we left the program: First of all we enable a wider range of consumer and raise the speed of the original fan (that otherwise becomes unbearable over 60 %). Then, with the patience of Asian headed up the core frequency and memory, one at a time, trying at every turn the system stability.

Many of these previously mentioned programs handle multiple configuration profiles, so it is usual to enable each space for each benchmark. So, and then better understand NVIDIA GTX 660 Ti, achieved the following results in some of the 3DMark (click to enlarge photos):

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 30NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 31NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 32

Bonus Track (3DM06: +40 K)

There were two young and passionate overclockers, that when they get together they always try to go further in search of glory and honor (and good food). Enhanced by a recent personal feat, these young people did not find anything better than their metal strip to the GTX 660 Ti, to dress in costumes based real watercooling. It was thus after dozens of crashes, BSOD, trial and error, lots of tweaks and even ancient red screens of death, the guest star was showcased in a new brand to continue falling in love so beautiful art of overclocking (click to enlarge photo ):

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti image 33

Again finished a review of a NVIDIA Kepler with a very good feeling. The card appears to overshadow the midrange AMD GCN and succeeds with flying colors.

In most of the titles that exhibit the GTX 660 Ti stands above the HD 7870, both having the same price range. Starting this shows that if we have the budget for both can safely opt for the green side of the force. But besides the new Ti goes by more and comes dangerously close to the upper range of AMD.

But not everything is rosy as they say, for where this model suffers in cutting bandwidth, something that you can also see, as the tests made to her older sisters. The times presented the most demanding tests, with what could turn filter the GTX 660 Ti away from his privileged place as a midrange card and fell a little behind and stopped being the pretty girl to watch a HD 7970 .

As to overclock the card follows the trend of current 28nm chips and not difficult than it should require them to reach the gigahertz frequencies, a brand that reaches almost all current card. The GTX 660 Ti is achieved elevate the level of frequency of its bigger brothers, with over 1200 MHz in the boost, not bad.

As for the physical issues again we find this tiny cooling system based on a blower and a small ventilation system in copper and aluminum, nothing too big or heavy weights. Again, the default performance of this system, found in the GTX 670 and GTX 660 Ti, seems inadequate for cases when the core is under excessive load. This can be remedied as we increase the level of main fan speed, but receiving also a noise really becomes unbearable from 60% upwards. Is to consider the imminent appearance of each manufacturer’s proprietary solutions and / or partners of NVIDIA, we can clearly expect an improvement in thermal performance for exotic systems that are out of the rule proposed by the Santa Clara.

We believe that the card is perfect for someone looking for the best and not waste it in full HD resolutions. The GTX 660 Ti practically almost all the titles check the “pocket” and is the perfect companion for the best platforms Gamer.
