Rusl: The ranking of Spanish universities in Free Software
If you’ve ever wondered about the role of Spanish Universities in the development, use or dissemination of free software, you now have a source of information to answer your questions: The Ranking of universities in Free Software (Rusl).
This is a ranking of the 72 Spanish universities based on their commitment to the use, dissemination and creation of free software, and is based on 37 indicators that measure the work done by each in the field of free knowledge, and that forms the IDSL ( Diffusion index of Free Software ).
So Rusl determined that the three institutions of higher education are at the top of Free Software in Spain are the University of Granada, the University of Zaragoza and the University of La Laguna. These three institutions were the highest IDSL, as shown in the image below:
What are the data by Rusl? Clearly, the ranking provides specific information about the strengths and weaknesses in the dissemination of Free Software in each university, as they assess seven dimensions: Culture of the university’s free software, teaching, technology dissemination, Webometrics, institution and production.
With this information clear, its leaders can take steps to continue with their plans in this area, or establish mechanisms of inter-institutional collaboration. On the Web project and stress its importance:
“Rusl occurs in response to the need for universities to have a standard methodology for measuring homogeneously to all universities under the same criteria that make the information obtained is accurate and useful.”
In summary: The comparison to measure the efforts made on Free Software, the time to meet the initiatives of other universities and to what aspects should work to improve.
Also, something I thought was really interesting if we talk about utility of this ranking is that following the principles of OpenData, provides free access to all information and analyzes to develop Rusl, which can be very useful as a starting point for further research.
Rusl is a joint effort of a group of industry experts with the cooperation of the universities and the National Reference Center for the Application of Information Technology and Communication (Cenatic) and the Center for Entrepreneurship Technological Support ( Bilib). If you want to know more about this project and its methodology , do not hesitate to visit your website that has all the detailed information.
It is certainly a good initiative to standardize data on the efforts of Free Software in Spanish universities are doing, it also gives us a pretty close to the truth about how SL is the landscape of the country because we know it is from these institutions and public administration which promotes the adoption of these solutions.Classification, Free Software, Ranking, research, Rusl, SL, Spain, Spanish, state, Study, Universities
