Sharp achieves the highest conversion efficiency of the solar cell world 44%
Sharp Corporation has achieved this conversion efficiency using a hub composed of triple-junction Solar cells. These solar Cells operate on a hub system lens that focuses sunlight on the cells to generate electricity.
Solar cells consist typically offer high conversion efficiency, using photo-absorption layers made from compounds of multiple elements, such as indium and gallium.
Concentrator solar cells composed of triple junction Sharp, uses a technology that enables efficient conversion of sunlight into electricity by means of a stack of three photo-absorption layers, the lower of which is made of InGaAs ( indium gallium arsenide).
To achieve a conversion efficiency of 44.4% concentrating, Sharp worked to expand the effective area of the cell concentrator and ensure uniformity of width at the connection interface between the cell and electrodes concentrator.
Due to its high conversion efficiency, solar cells have been made up to now mainly used in space satellites. Projecting into the future, Sharp targets would take advantage of this new achievement to make composite solar cells become more viable in common applications such as a household power supply, electric vehicles, computers and mobile phones.
