The Daily News Corp closes its iPad-only newspaper
In less than two years, News Corp’s experiment to create an iPad-only newspaper failed and the company ended up closing the publication, which will have its last issue on December 15.
Part of the team that produced the 120 people daily will be integrated into other areas of News Corp. The announcement comes amid major organizational changes in the company, which is separated into two: An entertainment company, and other publications.
In a statement, the manager and the firm’s founder, Rupert Murdoch, said: “The Daily was a bold experiment in digital publishing and an incredible vehicle for innovation. Unfortunately, our experience was that we could not achieve a large enough audience long enough to convince us that the business model was sustainable in the long term. Because of this, we have taken what we have learned from The daily and apply it in our properties. “
Murdoch thanked journalists and the team that worked on the project. The Daily was launched in February 2011 with great fanfare looking to start a “new age of information”, however, failed to attract subscribers. At the end of the day, it was a generalist newspaper like so many others that are out there, designed and sold to people who do not seem really interested in reading newspapers, no matter what platform are.
Although Murdoch seemed very interested in promoting this idea, is not sustainable finally keep losing money to the project.
