The new CPUs and APUs AMD Opteron x86 and ARM based
The SoC Opteron X Series “Kyoto” to micro-servers (like HP Proliant Moonshot ) are the first of a whole new and updated line of products for the market for supercomputers, servers, micro-servers and Workstations is scheduled to present AMD, and have them described below.
amd has divided its server product lines into three very distinct segments:
SoCs for micro-servers and data centers
The second product to market AMD micro-servers and will complement the SoC opteron X Series “Kyoto” are the SoC AMD Opteron A Series “Seattle”, made up of between eight and 16 core arm Cortex-A57 (ARMv8 or ARM 64-bit) operating at frequencies from 2.0GHz and up, accompanied by some units of computation (encryption, compression and others) dedicated to assisting its ARM cores.
Among the other features of SoC Seattle include:
- Made with the 28nm manufacturing process.
- Integrated memory controller with support for up to 128GB of DRAM memory for SoC.
- Integrated 10GbE LAN.
- Storage Controllers with a large number of ports (SATA, SAS).
Seattle also has interconnecting integrated AMD Fabric Freedom (technology acquired from SeaMicro), which will allow developers to micro-servers reduce costs and dense design configurations for data centers.
The SoC AMD Opteron A Series “Seattle” will be available between July and December next year.
APUs and CPUs for Servers and workstations
Family of products that replaces the current microprocessor Opteron 3300 Series “Delhi” socket AM3 + in the segment of the servers and workstations mono-socket, which will consist of the new APUs and CPUs Opteron X Series “Berlin” socket fm2 +; Berlin would become the equivalent of the apu for Desktops Kaveri socket FM2 + , sharing many of its specifications:
- Made with the 28nm manufacturing process.
- Comprised of four cores based on micro-architecture Steamroller .
- AMD FirePro Graphics based on the Graphics Core Next architecture “GCN”.
- Memory Controller DDR3-1866 ECC human with support for up to 128GB per socket.
- Controller PCI Express (PCIe) 3.0 integrated.
- Standard Programming Support CPU / gpu unified Heterogeneous System Architecture “HSA”.
AMD claims that Berlin (Steamroller + Sea Islands) offer performance per watt over 7.8 times that of Delhi (Piledriver), a factor that makes her ideal replacement dense configurations on servers and workstations through its high performance graph.
The APUs and CPUs Opteron X Series “Berlin” will be available between January and June next year.
supercomputers and server CPUs
This product line will consist of microprocessors Opteron 6300 Series “Warsaw”, which will be 100% compatible with the current AMD socket G34. Among the features of the AMD Opteron 6300 Series CPU “Warsaw” we have:
- Made with the 32nm manufacturing process.
- Comprised of between 12 and 16 cores based on Piledriver micro-architecture +.
- Infrastructure supports dual and quad socket configurations.
- AMD-compliant Open 3.0 Server.
AMD says that thanks to its micro-architecture refined, Warsaw offers higher performance per watt than their predecessors ( Opteron 6300 Series “Abu Dhabi” and socket G34 Opteron 4300 Series “Seoul” socket C32), while becomes a very economical upgrade option for existing G34 socket servers and supercomputers.
The AMD Opteron 6300 Series microprocessors “Warsaw” will arrive between March and June next year.
Three new and exciting products from AMD, with which the company intends to regain ground in the server market, a segment in which they will have to fight a fierce battle against the Intel and ARM options available, as well as against other architectures based microprocessors as RISC, MIPS, Power and others present in the current servers and supercomputers.
The APUs and CPUs Opteron X Series “Berlin” will be the first to arrive, and represent an alternative to the recently released Intel microprocessors V3 Xeon E3 Series “Haswell-DT” .
Also interesting is that AMD does not have planned a successor to Kyoto based on x86, but since this is a newly launched product, maybe AMD has decided to extend its validity for all of next year, in 2015 to launch a replacement based on its new micro-architecture Jaguar + or newer.
As for high-end server products. Apparently AMD has chosen to extend the life of their sockets, so that Warsaw may be the last update for them in 2015 to launch its first products based on Steamroller, which almost certainly will use a new socket.
