Video filtering CERN aims to discover the Higgs boson
A leaked video of the CERN seems to confirm the discovery of the expected Higgs boson, a particle (so far hypothetical) would explain why some particles such as quarks and electrons have mass. In the video, Joe Incandela, spokesman for the CMS detector of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), states:
“We have found a new particle. When we say that we have observed the particle means that we have enough data to say that’s definitely there, and is unlikely to disappear. “
The video was available on the official site at CERN, but then they began to display news about it, was removed. Tomorrow, CERN scientists will conduct a conference , for which a major announcement is expected – as the discovery of the famous boson. In fact, the video is dated July 4th (tomorrow).
In the video, Incandela indicates that the particle decays into two protons – which means that it is a boson -, with a mass of about 130 times that of a proton. This would place the particle in the 121 GeV, while the above calculations are expected to find the Higgs at 125 GeV.
However, the video does not say directly that they are talking about the Higgs boson. “You could finally see that their properties are very consistent with the Standard Model Higgs, or you may find that their properties do not fit exactly with the predictions of the Standard Model. And if that’s the case, we have something really deep here. It could be a gateway to the next phase of exploration of the deeper tissue of the universe, “said Incandela.
Indeed, the Standard Model of Physics predicts the existence of the Higgs boson, if it does not exist it would need redrafting.
Incandela appears optimistic, however. “If we confirm this, something I think will happen, will be one of the greatest advances in physics in decades. This is very, very significant. It’s something that could ultimately be one of the greatest views of any new phenomenon in our field in the last 30 or 40 years, going back to the discovery of quarks, “he adds.
From CERN, indicated that this is just one of many videos that were recorded and leaked by mistake, without confirming whether it was the expected discovery or not. Anyway, tomorrow we will know the final outcome.Higgs boson, LHC, particles, Physics, Science
