Worm kidnapper threatens Skype users

A called “Dorkbot” is being distributed through links in the chat system Skype, turning the PC into a zombie in a botnet and requiring the user to pay $200 to release their files, that would otherwise be eliminated .

This hijacker has expanded quite fast – 400 infections were detected in less than 12 hours – according to the researchers at Trend Micro, taking advantage of social engineering to trick users to click on links. The links send the user to download “Skype_todaysupdate.zip” that downloads the Trojan itself.

Called Skype users to upgrade to the latest version of VoIP software, and also check the computer’s security settings. Also remember that there is no need to click on links that appear suspicious.

“We are aware of this malicious activity and are working quickly to mitigate the impact. We strongly recommend upgrading to the newest version of Skype and apply updated security features on your computer, “the company said.
