What is a section and what is it for in Microsoft Word documents?

When you open a new document in Microsoft Office, a section is created. In other words, the document is made up of a single unit which will have the same letter format, line spacing, margins and other types of settings.

In case you need to modify some of the elements that we mentioned before, you don’t need to create another file, just create another section within the same document so you can configure different margins and even the orientation of the sheet.

In this way you can create a significant number of formats in the same text according to the number of sections you decide to open.

Advantages of using sections Why should you take advantage of them?

The advantages that you will have when you use different sections in your text will be the following:

  • No need to create another document when you need one or more sheets to have a horizontal orientation.
  • You can change the line spacing between paragraphs and lines without the need to alter the rest of the document.
  • You will have the possibility to insert tables and images and modify the margins according to graphic needs so that you have a neat file.
  • If you need to write long texts and start a new chapter on another sheet, you can use a section break to automatically start where you want. This will help you modify the paragraphs previous to that section break without having to worry about whether the new chapter is located correctly.
  • Sections change the numbering automatically, so if you need to incorporate new texts before or after these, you will have no problems with numerical correlation.
  • It is ideal for use in indexes. This is because you can create a section only for this sector and in this way you will be able to modify the rest of the text without the need to change the place for the index or introductory paragraphs.
  • When you enter graphics, you will have the option to transform the configuration of the fonts so that the drawing is perfect. Then, when you’re done, you can go back to the initial settings if you’ve made a section break.

What are all the types of section breaks in Microsoft Word?

There are different types of section breaks that you can use with this word processor. We will show you below all the ones you have to choose from:

  • Next page: When you use this type of jump, you will have the option to start writing the next word on the sheet that continues.
  • Continuous Section: With this option you can continue writing on the same sheet, just as you would if you did not have a new section. The advantage of this is that you can change the format of the margins without problems and your text will be quite neat.
  • Pair: When you use this function, you can create a section on the next page that is even numbered.
  • Odd page: As with the previous section type, with this tool you will make the jump to the next odd-numbered sheet.
